Baytree Colony, Baytree, Alberta.

Skyway Grain Systems is very proud to have had the privilege of building an all new grain handling / drying / storage facility for the brand new Hutterite Colony, Baytree Colony. Baytree Colony is a new Hutterite Colony, split off from Beiseker Colony. The land was purchased in the fall of 2018 and immediately after that the call was made to Skyway Grain Systems start designing and pricing a new grain handling / drying system. The parameters presented were: approximately 750,000 bushel storage, large top of the line grain dryer and all of the grain handling equipment to connect all storage bins back to the dryer and the truck loading / unloading driveway.

List of grain storage in the system:

  • 5 x Sukup Commercial Model 5409 Flat Bottom Galvanized Grain Bin (73,046 Bushel Each)
  • 3 x Sukup Commercial Model 4809 Flat Bottom Galvanized Grain Bin (56,909 Bushel Each)
  • 4 x Sukup Commercial Model 3610 Flat Bottom Galvanized Grain Bin (34,250 Bushel Each)
  • All of the Flat Bottom bins are equipped with full floor Canola perf aeration, Bin Sense Live remote monitored temp / moisture cables system, inside ladders, exterior ladders, roof handrail, peak handrail, full structural roof (rafters for the higher snow load), high level diaphragm type level sensor, and the Springland U-Trough/Bin Sweep unload system.
  • 6 x Sukup Heavy Duty Commercial Model 2707 Hoppers Bins (15,700 Bushel Each) each equipped with Grain Guard Rocket Aeration, temp/moisture cables. Four of these are for wet grain surge ahead of the Sukup mixed flow grain dryer and two are for dry grain surge behind the grain dryer.
  • 1 x Meridian Model 1620 Hopper bin on top of a Meridian Loadout structure (4120 Bushel). Equipped with high level sensor, electric operated exit gate, and the hopper sits down on load cells so each load can be pre weighed before filling the truck.

List of Grain Handling Equipment:

  • Sukup Model 2414 Mixed Flow Dryer capable of removing 5% moisture from Wheat at 2,150 bushel per hour (BPH) discharging cooled.
  • 12” x 10,000 BPH Commercial Hutchinson Double chain Grain Pump Loop conveyor system
  • 4000 BPH – Sukup Hy-Flight Curved Incline drag conveyor for unloading wet hoppers
  • 12” x 4000 BPH Lambton Cannon Drag conveyor for taking wet grain from the Sukup 16”x17” conveyor up to the top of the Sukup 2414 dryer
  • 4000 BPH Sukup 24” Head Pulley Galvanized Bucket Elevator for elevating the dry grain from the dryer to the two 2707 dry surge hopper tanks
  • 12” x 10,000 BPH Lambton Cannon Drag conveyor for taking grain off the top of the 12” Hutchinson Grain Pump conveyor over to the line of 3610’ Sukup Flat bottom bins
  • 12” x 10,000 BPH Lambton Cannon Drag conveyor for filling the Sukup 3610 flat bottom bins.

Baytree Colony Grain Handling System Design:

The main component in the system is the 12” x 10,000 BPH Commercial Hutchinson Grain Pump loop drag chain conveyor.

The key to this commercial Grain Pump loop is that it is designed with double 81XHH chain which allows for a much longer Grain Pump system design than the standard 12” Hutchinson Grain Pump which only has one strand of 81XHH chain – the double chain allows the designer to put larger HP drives on which means a longer line of bins and more bushel capacity under one line.

This Loop drag chain conveyor is installed on a slant where the top run goes across the top of the Meridian 1620 loadout bin above the truck loading/unloading driveway, the 4 Sukup 2707 hoppers used for wet surge, the five Sukup Model 5409 flats and the three Sukup Model 4809 flats.

The other two Sukup 2707 hopper tanks are positioned above the bottom run of the loop and all of the Springland U-Trough/sweep bin unloaders in the 5409’s and 4809’s unload directly into the bottom run of the loop.

So if a truck comes in from harvest with wet grain that needs to be run through the dryer it will drive up onto the driveway ramp over top the bottom run of the Hutchinson Grain Pump loop conveyor, unload into the truck receiving hopper on the Grain Pump loop chain conveyor, from there the Grain Pump loop chain conveyor elevates and conveys horizontally the grain at 10,000 BPH into one of the four Sukup 2707 wet surge hopper tanks.

The wet surge hopper tanks are unloaded through the Sukup 16”x17” curved incline drag to the 12” Lambton Grain Cannon drag which takes it to the top of the Sukup 2414 Mixed flow dryer.

The Mixed flow dryer has a 10’ extension on its unload drag conveyor so that it reaches out and drops dry grain directly into the boot hopper of the Sukup dry grain bucket elevator – this Sukup bucket elevator lifts the grain up and drops it into one of two Sukup 2707 hoppers (dry surge hoppers) – when these two Sukup 2707 Hoppers are full of dry grain they empty directly into the bottom run of the Hutchinson Grain Pump loop chain conveyor which allows the operator to move the dry grain at 10,000 BPH into any of the bins in the system.

When a truck comes in from harvest with dry grain it also unloads into the truck receiving hopper on the 12” Hutchinson Grain Pump Loop chain conveyor and from there the grain is elevated and conveyed to any storage bin in the system.

The 4 Sukup Model 3610 bins were positioned off to the side of the main line because the allowable HP was maxed out – an extra top discharge gate was installed on the 12” Hutchinson Grain pump in order to allow the operator to unload a truck through the 12” Grain Pump up and along the top to this extra top discharge gate where it discharged into a 12” Lambton Grain Cannon drag over to the line of 4 x Sukup 3610 flats off to the south side of the main line, another 12” Lambton Cannon drag is used to distribute the grain to any one of the 4 x Sukup 3610’s (at 10,000 BPH).

All of the storage can be filled from the one truck receiving point, all of the bins can be filled with dry grain out of the dryer. All of the storage bins except for the 4 x 3610 flat bottom bins are unloaded through the 12” Hutchinson Grain Pump back to the Meridan Model 1620 Hopper on an overstructure above the truck driveway.

Reclaim conveyors back to truck loading for the 4 x Sukup 3610’s will be a part of future storage expansion.

Skyway’s crews started construction at the beginning of June 2019 and the system was commissioned and in full operation by September 17, 2019.
